Ha Giang to Sapa: one road, one long day
Ha Giang and Sapa are both mountain regions in northern Vietnam, and a road joins them. Many travellers do the Ha Giang Loop first and then head to Sapa, or the other way round. This page covers the bus and how to plan the connection.
The two places are different kinds of trips. Ha Giang is a loop by road over a karst plateau, mostly between 1,000 and 1,600 m, with passes and border villages. Sapa has its own guide with trekking, Fansipan and markets: see the Sapa travel guide. This page is only about moving between them. If you come from the plateau, our Ha Giang Loop itinerary shows how many days to plan before you leave.

Count on about 6 to 6.5 hours for 240 km. The time is not guaranteed. Traffic, weather and stops change it. For most travellers the morning limousine is the simplest choice: you arrive in daylight with time to find your accommodation. Do not plan a tight onward connection on the same day.

How to place both regions.
Order
Many travellers ride the loop first and take the bus to Sapa afterwards, so they do not have to return to Hanoi. Others go the other way round. Either way, keep the bus day free of other plans.
Buffer
Do not plan a tight onward connection on the day of the bus. Keep a spare day before a flight, because fog, rain and landslides can slow the road.
Connections
Buses between Hanoi and Sapa exist, but transfer times are not fixed. For the Sapa end of the trip see Hanoi to Sapa.
Which season suits a trip to both
Flowers, rice and rain.
The wet months on the Ha Giang side are May to September, with June to August the wettest. In October to December the buckwheat is planned to bloom, with the peak in early November. This depends on the weather, and no field is promised to be in bloom. The golden rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi in the west of the province start to turn yellow in September. Harvest dates differ from village to village.
Our pages on the best time to visit Ha Giang and on getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi have the details. Sapa's own season is covered in the Sapa weather guide.
