Dong Van at a glance

Dong Van (Đồng Văn) lies on the karst plateau in the far north of Vietnam, close to the border with China. The plateau sits mostly at 1,000 to 1,600 m, so evenings are cool and winter can be cold. The old quarter and the market square are the heart of the place, and most loop riders sleep here before they continue to the Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Since 1 July 2025, Dong Van is a commune (xã) in Tuyen Quang province, after Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang were merged. Maps, buses and guides still say "Dong Van town", and the name works fine on the road. If you plan the whole route, start with our Ha Giang Loop tours or read the loop map for the stages.

The old quarter and the market square

What to do on foot.

Old quarter

The old quarter and the market square are among the sights of Dong Van, and you cover them on foot. They are one part of town, not the whole geopark, so give them an hour or two rather than a day.

Sunday market

Dong Van holds its market on Sunday morning, so arrive early. It is the lively morning of the week and a good reason to plan a night here. More about the stalls, the other markets and photo manners is on the Ha Giang markets page.

Food

At the markets you find local dishes such as mèn mén and thắng cố, sticky rice and maize spirit. Eat where the locals eat, and ask what a dish contains before you order.

The Vuong Palace in Sa Phin

A key sight near Dong Van is not in town.

The Vuong Palace (Dinh thự họ Vương, also called Khu nhà Vương) stands in the village of Sa Phin (Sà Phìn), a short ride from Dong Van. It was the home and workplace of the Hmong leader Vuong Chinh Duc. The building mixes Chinese, Hmong and French influences.

Construction began in 1898. The palace was finished around 1903 to 1907, and it has been a national monument of architecture and art since 1993. The nickname "Hmong king" is a historical, popular label and does not describe anything that exists today.

Plan for opening hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and check them before a trip on a holiday or in winter. The base entry in 2026 is VND 30,000 per person, VND 15,000 with the 50 percent reduction. Children under 6 enter free.

Most people ride the loop from Ha Giang to Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and then over the pass to Meo Vac. For the Lung Cu detour, plan about 3 extra hours. Roads are not guaranteed to be open on every day, and fog is common on the plateau, so leave time in the schedule. If you do not ride yourself, an Easy Rider drives the bike for you.

Where to sleep in Dong Van

Typical price ranges in 2026.

Dong Van has guesthouses and homestays around the old quarter. A dorm bed costs about VND 100,000 to 150,000 per person and night. Private rooms mostly cost VND 250,000 to 500,000 per room, and some houses ask VND 400,000 to 600,000. These are rough guides, not offers, and rooms may not be free on your night. Every place has to register foreign guests, even for one night, so keep your passport at hand. More about stages and areas is on the where to stay page.

A buckwheat flower festival is announced for Dong Van in November 2026, with the opening on 6 November at the Youth Square. Bloom depends on the weather, and buckwheat grows from October to December.
